Last time, we talked about skateboarding on the tiles and I answered if you can skateboard on the tiles. Today, another question we will answer, which I find interesting. I see this question on forums and social media. The question is, can you skateboard on grass?

This question might sound absurd, but actually, it is not, since many skateboarders want to know the answer to this question. I know skateboarding should only be done on concrete or asphalt. But what about in grass? Can you skateboard on the grass? Let us find out!

Can you skateboard on the grass? It is possible to execute some skateboarding tricks on the grass but moving your skateboard on the grass is very hard. Many skateboarders execute or practice their first trick on the grass. The reason why is because the grass is soft. When they fall terribly, they will just fall on the grass.

However, that is the concise answer. We will dig deeper around this topic later on so that you can fully understand the reason why it is hard to skateboard on the grass and why it is beneficial, especially for beginners. So, let us proceed!

Can You Skateboard On Grass?

Like I have said above, it is possible to do various skateboarding tricks on the grass and usually, this is where most newbies started. However, moving your skateboard on the grass is very hard. The reason why is because grass has a very rough surface.

If you are very curious about skateboarding on the grass, you can try it for yourself. However, keep in mind that there are some rules in certain areas where they don’t allow people to step on the grass. So don’t forget to check the signs first on the grass before bringing your skateboard there.

So, to answer this question, it is possible to skateboard on the grass but it is very hard to move. Most of my skateboarder friends usually practice their first trick on the grass. The reason why they practice their first skateboarding trick on the grass is that they are afraid to fall off the ground.

When you practice your first skateboarding trick on the grass, it is much safer, even though you don’t wear safety gear like a helmet. Why? Because grass is soft and it is not as hard as concrete roads. However, the only thing that I dislike when falling into the grass is I feel itchy. When I fall to the grass, I scratch my body constantly because it feels itchy.

Is It Good For Beginners To Skateboard On Grass?

Yes! It is good for beginners to skateboard on the grass. However, it is only good if beginners desire to learn a certain trick that they are scared to execute on a concrete surface because they are afraid to fall. But if beginners like to learn how to move their skateboard, skateboarding on the grass is not suggested.

Like I have said above, learning various skateboarding tricks can be scary. That is why newbies in skateboarding often practice a certain skateboarding trick on the grass first so that it would be safe to fall. If they execute the skateboarding trick they desire to learn, they move to concrete or asphalt surfaces.

Learning how to fall on your skateboard is essential because you will fall constantly. If you already know how to fall properly from your skateboard, you will have a lesser chance of getting injured. You can start practicing falling into some grass and just fall off on purpose. You can try to roll if possible but sliding your knees and wrists will also reduce the impact.

Learning how to fall properly and practicing some skateboarding tricks must be done on the grass if you are afraid to get hurt. However, practicing to move, control, and stop your skateboard should be done on concrete or asphalt surfaces and not on the grass. The reason why is because you will have a hard time moving your skateboard on the grass. You can try it for yourself to testify.

Can You Practice Ollie On The Grass?

Every beginner in skateboarding does this but it is only good for part of the learning curve. You will not be able to execute lots of ollies while standing still. Moving at speed allows you to stretch out the time you get to perform an ollie or kickflip on your skateboard.

You can execute a skateboarding trick better if you do it at a faster lateral speed. So you can do what you can on the grass but also go ahead on the road and skate at speed towards the grass if you don’t want to hurt yourself just in case you fall.

So basically what you can do since moving on the grass is pretty hard is to start from the concrete surface, go at high speed, and when the grass is near, perform the ollie. This is a lot easier and safer because if you fail to execute the ollie properly and fall from your skateboard, you will end up on the grass.

Is It Safe To Skateboard On The Grass?

Yes! It is safe to skateboard on the grass but keep in mind that it is pretty hard to move on the grass so you can only practice certain skateboarding tricks on the grass. The reason why it is safe to skateboard on the grass is that grass is softer than a concrete surface. When you fall, the fall will not be hard.

Why Is Skateboarding On Grass Is Prohibited?

Some places don’t allow people to step on the grass because the grass will get destroyed before it grows. Same with skateboarding. Skateboarding on the grass might destroy the grass and other plants on that grass. That is why some places prohibit skateboarders from skateboarding on the grass.

Final Verdict

To conclude, yes, you can skateboard on the grass, but it can be pretty hard. You can execute some skateboarding tricks on the grass but not all skateboarding tricks, for example, the ollie. But you can create a way so that when you are about to execute a certain skateboard trick, you will end up in the grass when you fall. Just be wise and use the grass properly!
